Painting in Polymers
plasticpaintings

Plastic is a great medium because it lasts lifetimes. These are my selected works in acrylic, the paint will last longer than the canvas, the idea will live longer than the object used to express and myself as well.

top to bottom, left to right:

“Parvenu Artistica” or “The Green One”

A piece converted from digital format, originally a 3ds max model touched up in photoshop, converted to an acrylic painting done.

“Obama’s Ghetto Pass” or “Michelle X”

This statement was a commentary on how Michelle Obama is viewed by the media, and a lot of my friends, as the thing that makes Obama more acceptable to the African American community, his “strong black woman.”

“Self-Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”

This is my self portrait from freshman year, a testament to my ego; you could see it from down the street and recognize that it was me.  And yes, sometimes I look like Ludacris and Bob Marley.

“Legendary Juice”

Something about this photo of Tupac captivated me enough to paint the first layer years ago and the second layer years later.  I’m very proud of this piece.

“I-40″

I’m in love with the high way and overpasses.  I love to see the road coming, and the idea of a road intersecting coming from miles away intrigues me.

“Obama”

Obama has awesome oratory skills, referencing the likes of Martin Luther King in his intonations and poetic scriptings.  This pose was very nice, I enjoyed practising the dimunition in perspective.

Visual Music

Visual Music from Menes Kedar on Vimeo.

A project headed up by the Carpenter Brothers in Pat Fitzgerald’s Multimedia Studio at NCSU…. The challenge in ths project was to create an animation to represent music.  The music was a Eugene Kha piece that I remixed.  The animation is a somewhat abstract representation of the process of sampling and re-composing a song.

Medium Metamorphosis
fin-al_2

“Medium Metamorphosis” is fancy. IN this example I started with a digital photo, composited elements on top of it with photoshop and illustrator, and proceeded to turn it into a water color painting for my final project in my Water Color Studio.  It was great!  I was so excited about this piece I pulled an all nighter on the last day of my college career.  It was a huge task.  The challenge was to create a triptic with repeated elements at various sizes.  As you can see my element was the rectangular forms you would refer to as paintings.  The other element was the wave..  The idea behind it being my “Unified Creative Field” theory, which I will not explain for the sake of brevity.

The irony of this painting is that it has all of my acrylic paintings in it, from freshman year to senior year, some are stuffed inside of boxes behind paintings and others are standing on top of the boxes and in front, while being the final project I’d have to do for my BA.   Everything about this was carefully composed down to the time of day when the sun would come in perfectly, around 6am, and the size and shapes and colors of all the objects.    It is a very ambitous piece, so I found a comfortable stopping point and paused.  The painting has the potential to be far more dynamic and compelling than the digi-graph if it were pushed further.

Fly and Roll

These are my first couple water color pieces done in my water colors class.  It’s amazing to me how the techniques of acrylic differ.  Watercolors are very forgiving but it also requires much patience, which is my most selective attribute.  I truly enjoyed dabbling with this medium.
